Earlier Report Observations
The market for oil seeds and oleaginous fruits in Central America grew from 12 388 tons in 2018 to 18 678 tons in 2023, with a sharp 33% surge in 2023 alone. This jump was primarily driven by a doubling of imports to 9 572 tons, facilitated by updated trade regulations and agreements from the Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX), which improved market access and expanded domestic supply.
Domestic production increased steadily from 15 371 tons to 17 916 tons over the period, supported by regulatory efforts focused on quality and data. The Grain and Seed Research Center (Cigras) of the University of Costa Rica implemented seed quality verification in 2018, boosting consumer confidence. Subsequently, the National Seed Office (ONS) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) provided consistent monitoring and reporting, helping stabilize the market during minor fluctuations like the slight dip in 2020.
In 2024, regulatory projects by ONS and Fundecooperación continued to strengthen seed production capabilities through adaptive agriculture. Trade policies remained favorable, with COMEX maintaining updated tariff definitions and agreements, including the strategic relationship with China that opened export channels. Import volumes reached 13 365 tons in 2024, indicating sustained market activity.
