Earlier Report Observations
Production of primary sugar crops in Ecuador grew steadily from 7.5 million tons in 2018 to over 11.3 million tons in 2021. This expansion was supported by continuous investments to maintain supply and prevent market speculation, as seen in 2019. Additionally, the sector benefited from research and development by FIADE and CINCAE, which introduced national cane varieties covering 70% of the cultivated area, enhancing productivity. Access to credit through CFN B.P. also provided financial support to sugar producers, contributing to the upward trend.
The market shifted sharply downward in 2022, with production dropping to 7.7 million tons and further to 6.3 million tons in 2023. This decline was primarily driven by adverse weather conditions that delayed the sugar cane harvest in the Costa region, affecting output from major sugar mills. The impact persisted into 2023, necessitating sugar imports to avoid temporary shortages. Throughout this period, the sector relied on satellite monitoring and analysis to manage crops, while six main sugar mills continued operations across several provinces.
