The Spanish market for preserved vegetables, fruit and nuts experienced significant shifts between 2018 and 2023. Consumption volume increased from 189 thousand tons in 2018 to 244 thousand tons in 2020, followed by a decline to 196 thousand tons in 2021. The market then recovered over the next two years, reaching 240 thousand tons in 2023.

In 2024, market volume surged by 27% to reach 305 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by strong consumer demand for convenient, ready-to-eat products, which expanded the retail supply of canned fruits and vegetables by 15%. Furthermore, new tax reforms that excluded vinegar-preserved goods from levies on ultra-processed foods enhanced their competitiveness and appeal in the marketplace.

Spain's production volume of preserved vegetables, fruit and nuts rose for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 248.7 thousand tonnes, representing a 13.4% gain over 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production increased by 32.2%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.8%.

After two years of growth, Spain's exports of preserved vegetables, fruit and nuts declined. In 2020, exports totaled 42 611 tonnes, showing a sharp 22.7% decrease from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 10.2%, with a CAGR of -3.5%. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 55 112 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 12.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States (19.6% of exports in kind), France (16.3%), and the United Kingdom (15.6%) were the leading destinations for Spain's preserved vegetables, fruit and nuts exports. Together, they accounted for 51.4% of total export flows.

In 2020, Spain's exports of preserved vegetables, fruit and nuts amounted to 90.8 million US dollars, reflecting a gradual 9.9% decline from the prior year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 5.3%, equating to an annualized rate of -1.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 100.7 million US dollars, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 5.1%.

Over the period 2017-2020, imports grew by 4.7%, with a CAGR of 1.5%. The lowest point was in 2019 at 33 636 tonnes, and the largest drop occurred in 2018 at 4.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, India (37.3% of imports in kind), Turkey (12.0%), and Germany (10.9%) held the largest shares of Spain's imports of preserved vegetables, fruit and nuts. Combined, they represented 60.2% of total import flows.
