Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the Portuguese market for preserved vegetables, fruit and nuts in physical terms expanded from 18 571 t to 26 069 t, despite a sharp contraction to 16 187 t in 2020. The market's value followed a similar pattern, falling to 19 684 thousand US dollars in 2020 before rebounding strongly to 40 159 thousand US dollars by 2023. The recovery and subsequent growth from 2021 onward was supported by a rising consumer demand for plant-based ingredients, driven by greater awareness of sustainability and health, which increased consumption of vegetable-based food products.

From 2023, the market began adapting to new European Union marketing standards for fruits and vegetables, including processed products like those preserved in vinegar or acetic acid. These rules, which are being implemented gradually and will be fully enforced from January 2025, establish specific requirements for labeling, packaging, and commercialization. This regulatory shift is shaping market practices and influencing consumer behavior in Portugal.
