Earlier Report Observations
The Canadian prepared sweetcorn market entered the period under the new Food Safety Regulations enacted in June 2018, which mandated licensing for most processing, packaging, and labeling activities. These requirements were further refined in 2019 with updated identity standards and precise labeling rules for processed fruit and vegetable products. During this initial regulatory adjustment phase, the market volume saw a modest decline from 80 425 t in 2018 to 78 574 t in 2019.
A temporary exemption from mandatory grain reporting in Eastern Canada for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 crop years provided operational relief, coinciding with a market volume rebound to 82 203 t in 2020. The subsequent decline to 77 554 t in 2021 occurred alongside regulatory prioritization of new animal feed rules, which may have absorbed industry focus. The market value, however, continued its upward trend, reaching $90.6 million in 2021.
In 2022, a 6.0% expansion in sweetcorn planted area in Ontario increased raw material supply, supporting a recovery in market volume to 78 884 t. This production boost, combined with strong local corn prices in Quebec and harmonized national grain reporting rules, helped drive the market value to a peak of $114.8 million. By 2023, volume contracted to 74 222 t with a corresponding value of $102.6 million, concluding a period of regulatory evolution and supply-side influences.
