Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the domestic market volume for prepared or preserved poultry meat and offal in Poland more than halved from 183 thousand tons to 82 thousand tons. This sharp contraction occurred alongside a doubling of exports, which grew from 125 thousand tons to 250 thousand tons. The export surge was fueled by strong global demand, particularly after the African swine fever crisis in China boosted worldwide poultry imports, and by Poland's expanding trade with non-EU markets like Ukraine, Ghana, and the Philippines.

Production levels remained stable between 280 and 306 thousand tons but faced repeated disruptions. In 2021, intensified avian influenza outbreaks and COVID-19 restrictions strained operations. From 2022, production costs more than doubled compared to 2020 due to the war in Ukraine and China's increased grain imports, with feed and energy making up 80% of expenses. These cost pressures, combined with high inflation, led to rising consumer prices and a rationalization of household spending, contributing to a drop in purchase volumes in 2023.

Throughout the period, market dynamics were shaped by intense competition and shifting consumer preferences toward healthier, diet-conscious options and animal welfare. This drove innovation and diversification in processed poultry products. Despite the shrinking domestic volume, poultry remained the most consumed meat in Poland, supported by ongoing development of new product segments, though the industry continued to grapple with high input costs and avian flu.
