Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the European market for prepared pineapples contracted, with volume falling from 363.3 thousand tonnes to 303.7 thousand tonnes. This decline was accentuated in 2020 by extreme weather events, including El Niño and La Niña in Costa Rica and droughts in Thailand and the Philippines, which significantly reduced pineapple yields and raw material availability for processing.

The market recovered in 2021, reaching 346.4 thousand tonnes, as post-pandemic trade resumed despite high logistics costs. Growth continued in 2022, with volume climbing to 359.6 thousand tonnes, fueled by increased global demand for pineapples and accompanied by product innovations like the launch of Del Monte Zero in Costa Rica.

A sharp correction occurred in 2023, with market volume dropping to 242.2 thousand tonnes. This coincided with a noted decline in consumer demand for fresh pineapples in Italy, a key market, and a broader market adjustment following earlier periods of supply constraint.
