This growth was supported by a marked rise in domestic production, which increased from 54.7 thousand tonnes to 106.7 thousand tonnes over the period. Imports also contributed, climbing from 45.9 thousand tonnes to 63.7 thousand tonnes, while exports remained relatively small and volatile, thus having a limited effect on overall market size.

Export volumes showed significant fluctuations during this period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2019 at 3 315 tonnes, after peaking in 2017, with a six-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports from South-eastern Asia reached 5 541 tonnes, a sharp 67.2% increase from 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018, dropping by 72.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export market in kind was highly diversified. The top three destinations—the United States (28.9% of exports), Japan (11.3%), and Saudi Arabia (9.8%)—together accounted for just 49.9% of total flows. The remaining 50.1% was made up of numerous smaller markets.
