From 2018 to 2020, Togo's poultry production rose steadily as the government introduced modern farming guidelines and launched support programs like the National Program for Support to Agriculture and Food Security, which established new poultry units and trained health inspectors. Market volume dipped slightly in 2020 after authorities banned imports of live poultry and derivatives from six countries to prevent avian flu, which reduced incoming shipments despite growing domestic output.

Growth accelerated after 2021 when a 430 billion FCFA investment plan for the poultry sector was announced, alongside a target to produce 30 000 t of chicken meat locally by 2030. These efforts were reinforced by rules requiring importers to source at least 10% of their volume from local producers, stimulating domestic production. By 2023, the start of construction on a large integrated poultry complex in Avétonou and temporary restrictions on frozen poultry imports further supported local farmers, helping push the market to a record volume.

In 2024, the government continued to back local industry by temporarily suspending new import permits for frozen poultry to clear domestic stocks and officially launching an integrated poultry project, signaling ongoing commitment to expanding domestic production capacity.
