Earlier Report Observations
The market for pig offal in Togo began the period at 1 057 tonnes in 2018, supported by growing urban pork consumption and the government's National Development Plan aiming to transform the economy. In 2019, market volume dipped slightly to 1 006 tonnes, while the Ministry of Agriculture launched the 'Top Produits du Terroir' concept to promote processed and packaged local food products. A notable recovery occurred in 2020, with volume rising to 1 091 tonnes, driven by the government's 'consume local' month initiative that included fairs and workshops to boost demand for domestic goods.
After stabilising at 1 072 tonnes in 2021, the market expanded sharply to 1 228 tonnes in 2022. This growth aligns with ongoing FAO support for structuring the pig farming sector and the emphasis on food safety and quality standards by the Togolese Standardization Agency. In 2023, however, market volume contracted to 1 024 tonnes.
Recent developments include the validation in 2024 of 42 national agro-food standards covering meat and poultry, aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Togolese products, and the suspension of frozen poultry meat imports, which may affect the broader meat market.
