Earlier Report Observations

The Latvian poultry meat market volume grew from 92 335 t in 2018 to 100 262 t in 2020. This expansion was initially driven by increased domestic demand for healthier and locally sourced products, supported by the dominant producer Putnu Fabrika Ķekava. In 2019, African Swine Fever outbreaks in China boosted global meat demand, indirectly benefiting poultry trade. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused supply chain disruptions but sustained demand kept the market rising.

From 2021 to 2023, the market experienced fluctuations, declining to 96 767 t in 2022 before a partial recovery to 97 799 t. A key driver was the sharp rise in feed costs for corn and soybeans, which pushed poultry meat prices up by over 11% in 2022 and dampened consumption. By 2023, a slight increase in poultry livestock numbers and consumer adaptation to higher prices allowed for modest market growth.

In 2024, domestic poultry production decreased marginally by 0.3%, while exports of live animals rose significantly. Imports of poultry meat also increased, reflecting ongoing adjustments in trade flows that shape the market's supply structure.
