Chicken meat and offal market in Latvia

The market volume for chicken meat and offal in Latvia grew from 57.3 thousand t in 2018 to 62.7 thousand t in 2020. This expansion was supported in 2020 by EU financial aid of EUR 9.35 million to Latvian poultry producers and processors, which helped offset the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and maintained production levels.

After peaking in 2020, the market contracted to 58.3 thousand t in 2022 before a slight recovery to 59.2 thousand t in 2023. The 2022 downturn coincided with a sharp increase in energy costs for Latvian agricultural enterprises, where gas bills for poultry companies surged from EUR 396 thousand in 2020 to EUR 2.5 million in 2022, raising production expenses and affecting import affordability and overall market volume.

Domestic production of chicken meat and offal increased steadily throughout the period, from 33.2 thousand t in 2018 to 37.1 thousand t in 2023, indicating a growing local supply base despite external cost pressures.

Latvia's chicken meat and offal production volume declined in 2021 after two consecutive years of growth. The country produced 35 080 tonnes, which remained relatively stable compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2018 to 2021, production increased by 5.8%, averaging an annual growth rate of 1.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2020 at 35 140 tonnes, while the largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2019 at 5.1%.

In 2021, Latvia's chicken meat and offal production was valued at 78 049 thousand US dollars, marking a significant year-on-year increase of 21.2%. Over the four-year period from 2018 to 2021, production value grew by 6.2%, translating to an average annual rate of 2.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 64 414 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 13.4%.

Latvia's chicken meat and offal exports continued to grow for the second consecutive year in 2021. The country exported 15 424 tonnes, representing a 1.8% increase from the previous year. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 14 779 tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 5.8%. The most substantial growth occurred in 2020 with a 2.5% increase.

From 2018 to 2021, Lithuania, Estonia, and Sweden were the primary destinations for Latvia's chicken meat and offal exports in volume terms. Lithuania accounted for 31.1% of exports, Estonia for 18.1%, and Sweden for 14.8%. Together, these three countries represented 64.0% of Latvia's total export flows.

After two years of decline, Latvia's chicken meat and offal export value rebounded in 2021. Exports totaled 34 316 thousand US dollars, showing a substantial 23.6% increase compared to the previous year. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 27 765 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 12.0%.

Over the 2018-2021 period, imports increased by 4.5%, averaging an annual growth rate of 1.5%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2020 at 42 698 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 4.6%.

Imports reached 69 127 thousand US dollars, reflecting a significant 17.5% increase compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, import value increased by 22.5%, averaging an annual growth rate of 7.0%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Lithuania, Poland, and Estonia were the largest contributors to Latvia's chicken meat and offal imports in value terms.
