Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, Ecuador's poultry meat production rose from 888 thousand tonnes to 1 015 thousand tonnes. This expansion was propelled by a 14% increase in broiler output, reaching 279.14 million birds, alongside a 16% jump in per capita consumption to 30.43 kg per year, solidifying the sector's self-sufficiency.

The market contracted to 908 thousand tonnes in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which lowered per capita consumption to 23 kg annually and disrupted operations. Higher corn prices also squeezed producer margins. A gradual recovery followed in 2021, with production rebounding to 986 thousand tonnes as consumption slowly improved.

Growth continued from 2022 to 2023, with production reaching 1 132 thousand tonnes. Consumption increased by 3.14% in 2022, supported by the implementation of new integrated farm management regulations. The sector achieved its first export of chicken to the Bahamas in 2023, though it concurrently faced elevated input costs from the war in Ukraine and biosecurity challenges from avian influenza.
