The potato starch market in Malawi grew from 49,316 tons in 2018 to 66,432 tons in 2023. This expansion was initiated by the launch of the government's Agricultural Commercialization Project (AGCOM) in 2018, which aimed to transform subsistence agriculture into commercial value chains, including potato starch, by training producer organizations and improving market linkages.

After stabilizing near 48,792 tons in 2019, market volume surged by over 18% in 2020. Despite COVID-19 supply chain disruptions, intensified support through AGCOM helped producers access inputs and markets, mitigating pandemic effects and enabling increased output.

Steady growth continued from 2021 to 2023, supported by ongoing AGCOM initiatives that strengthened productive alliances and emphasized quality standards and traceability, enhancing market access for potato starch.

Following a two-year decline, Malawi's potato starch production rebounded. In 2020, the country produced 57 749 tonnes of potato starch, marking an 18.4% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 8.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 48 788 tonnes, while the largest annual decrease occurred in 2018 at 7.6%.
