Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, potato starch production in SADC reached 49 779 tons, but declined to 49 179 tons in 2019 due to heat and drought conditions that reduced potato yields and quality. Export restrictions to African countries, aimed at stimulating local harvests, further influenced potato trade flows, though strong domestic consumption supported market prices. Production rebounded sharply in 2020, rising to 58 298 tons, with market size expanding to 61 987 tons.

Growth continued in 2021, with production increasing to 62 616 tons and imports surging to 11 370 tons, driving market size to 73 367 tons. In 2022, high potato yields of 42.4 t/ha, indicating favorable production conditions, supported further output growth to 63 732 tons, while global supply chain disruptions and tariff changes in key export markets reduced imports, keeping market size stable at 73 926 tons. By 2023, production reached 66 973 tons, but imports fell to 3 475 tons, leading to a market size decrease to 70 446 tons.
