Between 2018 and 2021, the Tunisian fresh potato market volume gradually declined from 492.4 thousand tonnes to 464.6 thousand tonnes. In 2018, the market was supported by initiatives to develop local seed production, such as Mabrouka Seeds' R&D program aiming to become the first private producer of 100% Tunisian potato seeds, which strengthened the local agricultural sector.

A significant drop to 424.1 thousand tonnes occurred in 2022, driven by a shortage of storage capacity following anti-monopoly measures that disrupted supply and pushed prices higher. The Ministry of Commerce intervened by setting maximum retail prices and imposing an export ban during Ramadan to redirect stocks to the domestic market and curb vegetable inflation.

The market rebounded to 482.7 thousand tonnes in 2023. By 2024, supply tensions persisted, with a 9% decrease in potato quantities at the Bir El Kassaa wholesale market and a government decision to import 6 thousand tonnes to regulate domestic availability.

Tunisia produced 450.0 thousand tonnes of potatoes in 2020, marking a 3.4% year-over-year increase. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 7.1%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 2.3%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 465.0 thousand tonnes. In 2019, production saw its largest decline of 6.5%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2018 with a 10.7% rise.

Exports potato from Tunisia

Exports in kind, t

After two years of growth, Tunisia's potato export volume declined in 2020. The export volume amounted to 2 520 tonnes, representing a modest decrease of 4.3% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 81.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 22.0%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 632 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 45.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Burkina Faso, Italy, and Libya were the main destinations for Tunisia's potato exports in volume terms. Burkina Faso accounted for 49.7% of exports, Italy for 28.7%, and Libya for 8.7%. Together, these three countries represented 87.2% of total export flows.

Potato export value from Tunisia increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 1 155 thousand US dollars, up by 1.6% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 118.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 29.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Burkina Faso, Italy, and Libya consistently led as the top destinations for Tunisia's potato exports in value terms. Burkina Faso accounted for 46.3% of export value, Italy for 30.7%, and Libya for 7.1%. Collectively, these three markets made up 84.1% of total export flows.
