Earlier Report Observations

The European market for potato flour, flakes, granules and pellets contracted from 757.9 thousand metric tons in 2018 to 367.0 thousand metric tons in 2020, with production falling from 915.3 to 560.7 thousand metric tons over the same period. This decline was driven by EU regulatory actions, including the non-renewal of ethoprophos authorization and a ban on three neonicotinoids for outdoor use, which limited pest control options for potato growers. Concurrently, emerging climate challenges began to adversely affect potato cultivation yields.

A rebound occurred in 2021, with market volume recovering to 591.6 thousand metric tons and production reaching 795.8 thousand metric tons. However, extreme weather events intervened: drought in Southeastern Europe in 2022 caused harvest losses and quality issues, contributing to a slight dip in the market to 579.2 thousand metric tons. Regional crop failures across Europe in 2023, coupled with producer prices that soared 77% above the previous year's level, further strained supply, pushing market volume down to 398.1 thousand metric tons.

For 2024, climatic extremes such as drought in Southeastern Europe, floods in Bavaria, and persistent spring wetness in Western Europe continued to threaten potato harvests, maintaining pressure on raw material availability for potato-based products.
