Earlier Report Observations

The German market for portable electric lamps between 2018 and 2020 was shaped by the rapid adoption of energy-efficient LED technology and increasingly stringent EU regulations. The shift to longer-lasting LEDs reduced replacement demand, contributing to a drop in unit sales. Concurrently, the EU Ecodesign Directive implemented in 2019 set higher energy efficiency standards, while follow-up restrictions in 2020 limited mercury-containing fluorescent lamps, gradually narrowing the range of conventional products available.

Market volume spiked to 4.7 million units in 2021 as distributors and retailers sold off remaining inventories of non-compliant lamps ahead of the September deadline, after which only Ecodesign-approved light sources could be placed on the market. From 2022 onwards, the market entered a sustained contraction phase. The August 2023 EU ban on T8 and T5 fluorescent lamps and most halogen lamps removed significant product categories, accelerating the decline. By 2024, the high-intensity LED retrofit cycle had largely concluded, leading to market saturation and a 6.1% revenue drop for the overall lighting sector.

Despite the downturn, the portable lighting segment continued to innovate, with over 500 new models featuring smart lighting and wireless charging capabilities introduced in 2024. However, consumer spending remained cautious, with households redirecting budgets toward essential expenses, further dampening demand for portable lamps.
