The Lebanese pork market opened the period at 1,110 t in 2018. The following year, the market volume contracted to 939 t. This decline coincided with a significant regulatory change in 2018, when the Ministry of Agriculture cancelled the decision to import frozen red meat and opened imports only for fresh, chilled, and vacuum-packed beef and sheep meat under health monitoring. This measure likely constrained supplies of frozen pork, contributing to a sharp drop in imports from 361 t to 199 t.

Market volume recovered modestly to 986 t in 2020 before entering a phase of rapid expansion. It surged to 1,316 t in 2021 and further to 1,805 t in 2022, driven by a substantial increase in imports, which rose to 592 t and then 1,066 t in those years. The growth in 2022 was supported by evolving market trends, including an expected dominance of the fresh processed meat segment due to rising consumer preference for these high-nutrition products, which likely stimulated demand for pork as a raw material.

In 2023, the market retreated to 1,626 t. This reversal was primarily driven by a marked decline in consumer purchasing power, which affected the entire meat sector. Concurrently, reports of increased fraud—such as mixing imported frozen meat with fresh product—prompted stricter invoice scrutiny by authorities, adding to market pressures.

Lebanon's pork production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 727.4 t of pork, representing a slight reduction of 1.8% compared to the previous year. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 750.1 t, which also saw the largest annual increase of 2.5%.

Lebanon imported 258.3 t of pork in 2020, marking a significant increase of 30.1% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 24.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of -8.8%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 198.7 t, while the highest was in 2018 at 361.2 t. The sharpest decline occurred in 2019, when imports fell by 45.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Brazil and Spain dominated Lebanon's pork imports in kind, together accounting for 91.3% of total volume. Brazil contributed 59.8% of imports, while Spain accounted for 31.5%, with other partners making up the remainder.

In 2020, Lebanon's pork imports reached 807.8 thousand US dollars, reflecting a substantial increase of 46.4% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 5.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -1.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 551.8 thousand US dollars, while the peak was in 2018 at 942.1 thousand US dollars. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when import value dropped by 41.4%.
