Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Czech pork market volume gradually declined from 473 thousand tons to 461 thousand tons. During this period, strong consumer preference for fresh pork was reinforced by the expansion of fresh meat counters in major retail chains, supporting demand. However, a reduction in import volumes contributed to the overall market contraction.

A significant turnaround occurred in 2021, when a marked increase in pig slaughter rates, including a 27.6% surge in sow slaughter, boosted domestic production. Coupled with rising imports, this drove the market volume to a peak of 476 thousand tons. The following year, high import levels of nearly 296 thousand tons sustained the market at this peak, offsetting a 5.5% drop in domestic output caused by lower slaughter numbers.

In 2023, the market volume fell to 452 thousand tons as domestic production declined further and imports decreased. Looking ahead to 2024, industry factors pointed to a potential recovery, with reported growth in pig deliveries for slaughter and production influenced by strong global demand, particularly from China, alongside ongoing reliance on imports from Germany and Spain.
