Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, goat meat production in Lebanon showed modest stability, edging up from 3 078 tons to 3 146 tons. This occurred against a backdrop of a deepening economic crisis that sharply reduced live animal imports and prompted consumers to shift toward cheaper frozen imported meat. The market was further strained by a lack of effective government oversight, which allowed fraud and mixing of frozen meat with fresh product to proliferate. However, the full impact of these pressures became clear in 2020, when production dropped by 29% to 2 225 tons. The continuing economic and living crises, coupled with rising prices and falling purchasing power, significantly curtailed fresh meat consumption.

After the steep 2020 decline, production continued to contract over the next two years, falling to 1 872 tons in 2022. This represented a cumulative drop of more than 40% from the 2019 peak. A slight recovery followed in 2023, with output rising 5% to 1 972 tons, though it remained well below pre-crisis levels.
