Earlier Report Observations
In 2018, Honduran pork production benefited from sustained investments in farms and the country's position as having the lowest live animal prices in the region, supporting domestic output. However, the market was severely disrupted in 2020 when hurricanes Eta and Iota destroyed numerous pig farms, forcing a sharp rise in imports from the United States to maintain supply. This damage, combined with a steady increase in per capita consumption that had reached 13 pounds by 2019, shaped the early period.
The post-hurricane recovery saw domestic production remain below pre-2020 levels through 2021 and 2022, while strong consumer demand kept import volumes high. In 2022, a one‑month government price freeze on pork and other basic‑basket items ahead of the Christmas season created tensions with producers, who cited liquidity pressures. Coupled with elevated production costs and high freight expenses, these factors contributed to a temporary contraction in the total market size that year.
By 2023, domestic pork production continued to decline, falling to 7 437 t. This drop was offset by sustained imports of over 46 000 t, keeping the overall market volume stable at approximately 53 700 t. The shift toward imported pork, triggered by the hurricane damage, appeared entrenched as local output struggled to recover.
