Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2023, goat meat production in Honduras showed remarkable stability, fluctuating within a narrow band between 151.3 t and 152.3 t. The market size mirrored production exactly, as neither imports nor exports were recorded. This steadiness occurred alongside the gradual implementation of stricter sanitary controls for meat processing.
The approval of the Regulation for the Sanitary Control of Food and Beverages (ARSA) in 2018 and its enforcement from 2019 required slaughterhouses and processors of goat meat to obtain formal authorization, reinforcing traceability and hygiene. This regulatory formalization contributed to the sector's stable output. Furthermore, the state's consistent 15% tariff on fresh, chilled, or frozen goat meat, maintained through annual tariff programs, provided a predictable framework for local producers.
In 2023, the Honduran State Policy for the Agrifood Sector (2023-2043) was approved, aiming to improve competitiveness and formalize meat production chains, including goat meat. By 2024, per capita meat consumption in the country had risen significantly, from 5.5 kg in 2020 to 7.8 kg, indicating growing domestic demand that could influence future market dynamics.
