Pork production in Eastern Africa expanded from 671 thousand tons in 2018 to 935 thousand tons in 2023, with market volume following a similar upward trajectory despite a temporary contraction in 2019. The presence of the state-owned Kenya Meat Commission, a major regional meat exporter, provided a stable influence on the meat market early in the period.

By 2021, underlying demand drivers such as urbanization and population growth pointed to significant market potential, even as high animal feed costs presented a persistent challenge to producers. The sector received a further boost from Kenya's rising meat exports to Gulf markets, which strengthened overall industry activity by 2023.

Recent initiatives have focused on enhancing production capacity. These include training and feed subsidy programs launched by companies like Farmers Choice, piglet distribution projects in counties such as Kiambu, and improved biosecurity measures that contributed to a decline in African Swine Fever cases.

In 2020, Eastern Africa produced 768.0 K t of pork, marking a 22.6% increase from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 38.5%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 11.5%. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, with a decline of 6.6%.

Exports pork from Eastern Africa

In 2020, pork exports from Eastern Africa reached 552 t, showing a 15.9% rise compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 48.7%, corresponding to an annualized rate of 14.1%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2018 at 575 t. The largest decrease happened in 2019, with a 17.2% drop, while the biggest increase was in 2018, at 54.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Arab Emirates (accounting for 39.3% of exports in kind), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (11.4%), and Bahrain (6.3%) were the primary markets for pork exports from Eastern Africa. Together, these three countries represented 56.9% of total export flows.

Pork exports from Eastern Africa declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region exported 1 520 K $ US worth of pork, down by 3.3% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 52.8%, equating to an annualized decline of 22.1%.

During 2017–2020, the United Arab Emirates (39.2% of exports in value terms), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (7.8%), and Bahrain (6.4%) led as the top buyers of pork from Eastern Africa. Combined, they accounted for 53.4% of total export value.

In 2020, Eastern Africa imported 5 303 t of pork, reflecting a sharp decrease of 27.3% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports dropped by 28.3%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -10.5%. The most notable increase was in 2019, at 15.2%.

Foreign pork supplies to Eastern Africa decreased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, import value amounted to 14 799 K $ US, showing a modest decline of 5.9% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 17.6%, with a CAGR of -6.3%.

Throughout 2017–2020, South Africa (26.6% of imports in value terms), Canada (12.3%), and Germany (11.5%) were the key players in pork imports to Eastern Africa. Collectively, they represented 50.3% of total import flows.
