After a moderate decline to 2 028 thousand tonnes in 2019, the pork market volume recovered to 2 095 thousand tonnes in 2020. Growth continued in the following years, exceeding 2 300 thousand tonnes by 2022. In 2018, the state-owned Kenya Meat Commission strengthened its presence in export markets, creating additional opportunities for the industry.

By 2023, the market volume stabilized at 2 374 thousand tonnes. This production increase was supported by improved biosecurity measures and vaccination campaigns against African Swine Fever, which reduced disease-related losses. Additionally, private companies such as Farmers Choice launched farmer support programs, including training and subsidized feeds, stimulating herd expansion and production volumes.

In 2024, the Kiambu County government initiated a piglet distribution project to attract new farmers, expanding the production base. Simultaneously, consumer preferences shifted towards chilled meat, influencing market segmentation and packaging requirements.

In 2020, Africa produced 1 964 K t of pork, marking a gradual increase of 3.8% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 12.8%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.1%. The most significant decline occurred in 2019 at 1.1%, while the largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 9.8%.

Exports pork from Africa

Exports in kind, K t

After two years of decline, Africa's cross-border pork shipments rebounded in 2020. Exports reached 5.0 K t, reflecting a sharp increase of 36.8% compared to 2019. However, between 2017 and 2020, exports overall decreased by 12.8%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 4.5%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 3.7 K t, with the largest decline occurring in 2018 at 25.6%.

Africa's pork exports declined for the third consecutive year in 2020, totaling 24.4 M $ US, which represents a controlled decrease of 8.6% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 17.5%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -6.2%.

During 2017–2020, the United Arab Emirates (5.0% of export value), Hong Kong (2.1%), and China (0.9%) were the leading markets for Africa's pork exports in value terms, together accounting for 7.9% of total export flows.

Africa's pork imports declined for the second consecutive year in 2020, with import volume at 135.8 K t, down 2.8% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 33%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -12.5%. The peak import volume was in 2018 at 210.1 K t, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 at 33.5%, and the largest increase was in 2018 at 3.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Brazil (34.8% of import volume), Germany (15.2%), and Belgium (6.7%) were the top sources for Africa's pork imports in volume terms, collectively representing 56.7% of total import flows.
