Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2024, the pork market volume in the CIS showed consistent growth, expanding from 3.3 million tons to over 4.3 million tons. This upward trend was initially driven by the expansion of production capacities from large agro-holdings and state-owned companies, alongside the entry of new players into the market. The emergence of new product segments, such as chilled and frozen pork, diversified supply and helped stimulate overall consumption.

The market's trajectory was further shaped by import substitution policies, notably the introduction of tariffs on pork imports in 2022, which curtailed foreign shipments and bolstered domestic production. Concurrent legislative changes, including tighter sanitary-veterinary regulations and the implementation of meat labeling and traceability systems, enhanced product quality and safety, reinforcing consumer confidence. Despite logistical disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, producers adapted, and the market maintained its growth momentum.

In later years, growth was supported by a shift in consumer preferences towards chilled meat and semi-finished products, prompting producers to invest in these segments. Increased export activity to other CIS countries, such as a notable 15% rise in shipments to Belarus in 2023, provided an additional outlet for production. By 2024, sustained trade barriers kept imports minimal, while domestic consumption and production continued to rise, underpinned by ongoing state support and regulatory measures.
