Sanctions and geopolitical restrictions from 2020 onward accelerated this shift by limiting access to foreign supplies, prompting local producers to fill the gap and capture a larger market share.

After a slight dip in 2021 linked to COVID‑19 disruptions and currency fluctuations, the market rebounded strongly in 2022, reaching 180.3 thousand tons. Production continued to rise in 2023, supported by the ongoing substitution of imported pig fat and by industry preparations for new mandatory meat product labeling rules scheduled to take effect in 2025.
