Earlier Report Observations
The pork market in Asia contracted sharply in 2019, with volume dropping to 56.4 million metric tons from 67.5 million the previous year. This decline was caused by the African Swine Fever outbreak that began in August 2018, which severely reduced China's pig population and cut domestic production. In response, government stockpiles released frozen pork to stabilize prices, and imports increased to supplement supply.
Market volume stabilized in 2020 before rebounding strongly in 2021 to over 68.4 million metric tons as pig production recovered. During this period, local production of plant-based pork alternatives such as Beyond Pork and OmniPork launched in Zhejiang and Guangzhou, creating a new segment amid shifting consumer preferences.
Growth continued through 2022 and 2023, with production expanding and market volume reaching 71.8 million metric tons by 2023. The expansion was supported by sustained output from major producers like Wens Foodstuff Group, which had scaled up breeding and slaughter operations.
