Pork production in Rwanda declined significantly from 10 259 t in 2018 to 5 153 t in 2022, reducing total market volume by nearly half over the five-year period. This contraction occurred alongside national agricultural strategies that identified pork as a high-value sector for development, including the PSTA 4 plan which encouraged investment through co-financing subsidies and focused on improving productivity in the pig value chain.

The market reversed course in 2023, with production jumping 59% to 8 207 t and market volume reaching 8 210 t. This rebound was supported by a reported doubling of Rwanda's meat exports to $22.3 million in the 2022/2023 fiscal year, reflecting enhanced production capacity and stronger external demand, while government policies continued to promote evidence-based innovation and modernization within the agricultural sector.
