Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the pork market volume in Angola contracted from 238 thousand tons to 166 thousand tons, primarily driven by a sharp drop in imports from 109 thousand tons to 34 thousand tons in 2019. Domestic production, however, steadily increased, supported by the expansion of Fazenda Santo António, which doubled its pork output in 2018 and continued to grow in 2020.

Market volume recovered to 206 thousand tons in 2021 as production rose by 15 thousand tons and imports temporarily increased. This growth coincided with the approval of the state budget for 2022, which included specific provisions for the pork sector, signaling government attention. In 2022, the market stabilized at 208 thousand tons, with overall national meat production reporting positive growth.

By 2023, the market volume declined to 184 thousand tons despite further production growth to 156 thousand tons. This drop was triggered by strict bans on imports of animal-derived products, effective from March 2023, aiming to stimulate local production. Major distributor Grupo Carrinho permanently suspended frozen pork imports, committing to supply only national output, while Banco de Investimento de Angola funded livestock projects to bolster domestic capacity.
