Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2023, the pork market volume in Timor-Leste showed significant fluctuations. The market grew to 13 487 tons in 2019, marking the highest level in the period, but then contracted by 18% in 2020 and by another 29% in 2021, falling to 7 799 tons. This was followed by a recovery, with market volume increasing by 42% to 11 063 tons in 2022 and by 11% to 12 322 tons in 2023.
Domestic production largely mirrored these movements. Pork production peaked at 12 931 tons in 2019, then dropped to 6 815 tons in 2021 before recovering to 10 743 tons in 2023. Imports, while accounting for a smaller share, steadily rose from 502 tons in 2018 to 1 579 tons in 2023, supporting market volume growth during the recovery phase.
Overall, despite the sharp decline in 2020-2021, Timor-Leste's pork market by 2023 returned to a level above that of 2018, showing resilience through a combination of domestic production and increasing imports.
