Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, Malaysian pig offal production began to decline as rising animal feed prices prompted farmers to reduce pig herds. Despite this, market volume remained stable in 2018-2019, supported by growing imports that offset the drop in domestic output.

In February 2021, an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak infected over 68 000 pigs and triggered state-level movement restrictions, causing supply shortages in key regions like Klang Valley and driving sharp pork price increases. This spurred higher imports of pig offal, which lifted total market volume to 8 866 t in 2021 even as local production continued to fall.

High feed prices kept pressure on pig production through 2022, further reducing domestic offal output. Market volume nevertheless rose to 9 416 t that year and jumped to 11 059 t in 2023, driven by a surge in imports that reached 7 302 t. Import volumes remained elevated at around 10 000 t in 2024-2025, indicating sustained reliance on foreign supply.
