Earlier Report Observations

Malaysia's poultry meat and offal market volume held steady at approximately 3 370 thousand tons in 2018 and 2019. The country's economic growth during this period strengthened consumer purchasing power, supporting stable demand for poultry products. By 2020, market volume expanded to 3 460 thousand tons, indicating continued consumption growth.

A sharp rise in fresh chicken prices from late 2021 led the Malaysian government to authorize temporary imports of frozen whole chicken for three months to address local supply shortages. This measure boosted imports to 97 thousand tons in 2021, though domestic production dipped slightly, resulting in a total market volume of 3 387 thousand tons. In 2022, stringent enforcement operations against non-compliant frozen poultry imports, particularly focusing on halal certification standards, tightened market entry for foreign products. Despite these controls, import volumes surged to 177 thousand tons, while consumer preference for local fresh chicken helped keep overall market volume stable at 3 384 thousand tons. The market value, however, jumped by 27% to 5 588 million US dollars, driven by higher prices and enhanced quality regulations.

The market continued its upward trajectory in 2023, with volume reaching 3 488 thousand tons and value rising to 5 762 million US dollars. Import volumes grew further to 238 thousand tons, underscoring the ongoing reliance on foreign supplies to meet domestic poultry demand.
