Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, pig fat production in Ghana experienced notable shifts. Output began at 2 520 t in 2018, bolstered by government measures to enhance livestock production, including the procurement and distribution of piglets to farmers under support programs for the poultry and livestock sectors. However, production declined to 2 366 t in 2019 before rebounding to 2 821 t in 2020.

After a decrease to 2 341 t in 2021, production recovered to 2 516 t in 2022 and reached 2 821 t in 2023. The growth in 2022 and 2023 was supported by continued government backing for livestock development to increase domestic meat output, coupled with rising demand for animal-source foods driven by population growth, urbanization, and higher incomes.
