Africa's pepper exports continued to rise for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 11 606 tonnes, a 32.2% gain compared to 2019. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 8 625 tonnes, which reflected a 7.2% decrease. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 24.8%, with an annualized growth rate of 7.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Africa's pepper exports in kind were highly diversified geographically. The United Kingdom accounted for 7.6% of exports, the United States for 7.4%, and Australia for 6.5%, together making up only 21.4% of total flows. The remaining 78.6% was distributed among numerous smaller partner countries.

After a two-year decline, Africa's pepper exports in value terms increased in 2020, reaching 42.6 million US dollars, a 14.0% rise year-over-year. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 37.4 million US dollars, which saw a 14.5% drop. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 16.4%, with a compound annual decline rate of 5.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam was the leading source for Africa's pepper imports in kind, accounting for 40.8%, followed by Brazil at 29.0% and China at 5.5%. Together, these three countries represented 75.2% of total import flows.
