From 2018 to 2022, the pepper market volume in Polynesia experienced significant fluctuations, growing from 114.6 tons in 2018 to a peak of 144.9 tons in 2021 before declining to 123.0 tons in 2022. Domestic production showed similar volatility, rising to 110.2 tons in 2019 then falling back to 80.3 tons by 2022, while imports surged to 67.6 tons in 2021 before moderating.

In 2023, the market stabilized at 125.0 tons as production increased to 86.3 tons. That year, the digital publication of patents and trademarks in the Official Journal – Industrial Property Edition (JOPI) facilitated local innovation and intellectual property protection. For 2024, import volumes rose to 50.9 tons following the liberalization of the kava (Piper methysticum) market in May, which removed pharmaceutical monopoly restrictions and simplified phytosanitary import criteria, easing market access for new players. Public tenders for agricultural infrastructure, such as a warehouse in Tahaa and an agro-processing workshop in Ua Pou, along with Bio Pasifika certification for local producers, supported domestic production and value-added processing.
