Production of dried shelled pigeon peas in Sub-Saharan Africa experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After a minor dip to 638.2 thousand tons in 2019, output surged to 803.5 thousand tons in 2020 before declining over the next two years to 705.2 thousand tons in 2022. The market rebounded strongly in 2023, reaching 951.4 thousand tons, which represents the highest volume in the period.

The crop is predominantly cultivated in East African countries such as Kenya, with an estimated 5.4 million hectares under pigeon pea cultivation across Africa. This established production base provides a consistent foundation for the regional market.

Recent developments highlight the crop's growing value as a lower-cost alternative to soy in animal feed, particularly in Cameroon, due to its favorable yield and production costs. Additionally, efforts to simplify cross-border trade regimes within East Africa could facilitate broader market access for pigeon peas and similar legumes.

After a two-year decline, dried shelled pigeon pea production in Sub-Saharan Africa rebounded. In 2020, the region produced 803.5 thousand tonnes, marking a sharp 25.9% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, overall production decreased by 7.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.5%. The lowest output was recorded in 2019 at 638.2 thousand tonnes, while the largest annual decline occurred in 2018, when production fell by 24.0%.
