Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the fresh pear market in Uruguay contracted from 12 769 tons to 8 366 tons. A sharp recovery followed in 2021, with market volume reaching 11 501 tons. This rebound coincided with a yield of 7 kg per plant and a deliberate shift toward off-season production to compete with imported pears, which strengthened domestic supply.

Subsequent years saw continued technological and varietal advancements. In 2022, yield per plant rose to 10 kg, and growers adopted post-harvest ethylene degreening and cold storage at 0°C to enhance quality and longevity. That year also marked the commercial introduction of the early Williams Precoz variety, allowing harvest in December and diversifying production into northern regions with milder winters. By 2023, the early variety was being consolidated, and promotional campaigns by the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries and Mercado Modelo sought to boost local consumption.
