The Bhutanese fresh pear market expanded from 1 376 t in 2018 to 1 593 t in 2019, driven by state-owned initiatives such as the Bhutan Agro-Industry Limited (BAIL), which was established to create markets for fruit processing and value addition. Government programs focused on replacing old orchards with improved pear cultivars and promoting sustainable horticulture, while growing consumer preference for organic and locally sourced fruits, aligned with the Gross National Happiness policy, bolstered domestic demand.

Market volume dropped sharply to 1 121 t in 2020 and further to 922 t in 2021, primarily due to supply chain and production disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted local farmers and import flows. By 2022, the market stabilized near 928 t, supported by continued government efforts, including programs for youth employment in fruit production and processing facilitated by BAIL, which helped offset some of the earlier losses.

In 2023, the market volume declined to 871 t, as limited domestic production capacity posed a constraint, even while consumer trends increasingly favored health-conscious and organic produce. During this period, BAIL's expansion in processing and the rising volume of pear imports from India, subject to price volatility, became significant factors influencing market dynamics.

Bhutan's pear production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2021, the country produced 859 tonnes of pears, marking a 22.4% decrease from 2020.
