The Swedish fresh pear market contracted steadily from over 30 500 tons in 2018 to less than 24 000 tons by 2023. This decline of more than 20% was primarily driven by a sustained reduction in imports, which fell by nearly 25% over the six-year period. Domestic production, while volatile, showed a net increase from 1 740 tons to 2 280 tons, but this growth was insufficient to offset the drop in foreign supply.

The sharpest market contraction occurred in 2020, when volume fell by 10% to 27 105 tons. After more moderate declines in 2021 and 2022, the market shrank again by 7% in 2023 to 23 932 tons. Throughout the period, exports remained negligible, so market size closely mirrored the balance between domestic output and import flows.

Sweden's pear production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 1,550 tons of pears, which is 6.1% less than in 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 24.4%, with an average annual decline of 8.9%.
