The volume of the fresh cherries market in Greece fluctuated between 54.5 thousand tonnes and 88.2 thousand tonnes from 2018 to 2023. After a drop to 60.0 thousand tonnes in 2019, the market partially recovered to 63.5 thousand tonnes in 2020 before facing a sharp decline the following year.

In 2021, severe weather conditions including frost and hail caused damage exceeding 90% in some growing areas, drastically reducing cherry production. This led to a market volume of only 54.5 thousand tonnes, with very small quantities available and high producer prices.

The market rebounded to 62.3 thousand tonnes in 2022 and surged by 42% to 88.2 thousand tonnes in 2023. Extreme spring weather in 2024—with rains, low temperatures, and frost—impacted production in key regions like Pella and Imathia, continuing the pattern of weather-related volatility.

In 2020, Greece produced 94 370 tonnes of cherries, representing a significant 14.8% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 15%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.8%. The most notable decline occurred in 2019, when production fell by 9.0%.

Greece's cherry export volume rose for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 30 982 tonnes, which is 39.3% higher than in 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 85.3%, with an annualized growth rate of 22.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Greece's cherry exports in volume terms were highly diversified. Germany accounted for 15.8% of exports, the Netherlands for 14.2%, and Italy for 12.4%, with these three countries together making up only 42.5% of total flows. The remaining 57.5% was distributed among numerous smaller markets.

Cherry exports from Greece increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, export value amounted to 76.352 million US dollars, showing a sharp 61.1% rise compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 128.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 31.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 31.939 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 4.6%.
