Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for fresh peaches and nectarines in the Americas showed significant variation between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 1 885 thousand tons, it grew slightly to 1 896 thousand tons in 2019 before declining to 1 782 thousand tons in 2020. A strong recovery followed in 2021, pushing the market to 2 017 thousand tons, but volumes then fell in consecutive years to 1 926 thousand tons in 2022 and 1 847 thousand tons in 2023.

The contraction in 2023 was influenced by a sustained reduction in domestic production within the United States, a key regional producer. Output of California Freestone peaches had declined by 6% over the previous decade, and nectarine production had fallen 30% since the 2013/14 season, constricting the supply available to the market.

Heading into 2024, the market landscape was shaped by supply chain disruptions and evolving consumer demand. Major importers like Oppy increased sourcing from Chile to maintain year-round availability, while consumers showed a growing preference for fresh, organic, and locally grown produce. Regulatory support for sustainable farming and food safety standards continued to be a factor, alongside the ongoing growth of online retail channels.
