Production of peaches and nectarines in Cyprus rose steadily from 1 620 tonnes in 2018 to 2 770 tonnes in 2023. The total market volume, however, experienced notable swings, reaching a high of 5 074 tonnes in 2019 before oscillating between 4 300 and 5 000 tonnes in the following years.

Market volume fluctuations were primarily tied to varying import levels, which dropped to 1 763 tonnes in 2022 after a peak of 3 240 tonnes in 2019. This import volatility was a key driver of the overall supply changes during the period.

Looking ahead, local peaches and nectarines typically enter the market in June, with retail prices around 2-3 euros per kg. The European Commission has proposed updates to marketing standards for fruit, and new, lower maximum residue levels for pesticides on peaches are scheduled to take effect in 2025.

Cyprus has seen its production of peaches and nectarines grow for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 2 290 tonnes, which represents a significant 24.5% increase compared to 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 7.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.4%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 620 tonnes, which also marked the largest decline of 24.1% during this timeframe.

Exports peaches and nectarines from Cyprus

Cyprus's exports of peaches and nectarines have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2019, exports reached 5 tonnes, showing a strong 13.7% rise from 2018. Over the period from 2017 to 2019, exports grew substantially by 86.8%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 23.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Greece and Germany were the primary markets for Cyprus's exports of peaches and nectarines in volume terms, together accounting for 97.9% of total exports. Other destinations played a much smaller role in comparison.

In 2019, the value of peaches and nectarines exported from Cyprus totaled 5 thousand US dollars, which was an 18.5% decrease compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2019, however, export values increased by 11.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.6%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 7 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 36.6% during this period.

After two years of growth, imports of peaches and nectarines into Cyprus declined. In 2020, Cyprus imported 2 166 tonnes, a sharp drop of 33.1% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports still increased overall by 18.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.8%. The highest import volume was in 2019 at 3 240 tonnes, which also experienced the largest increase of 34.8%.

Following two years of increases, the value of peaches and nectarines imported into Cyprus fell. In 2020, imports were valued at 3 012 thousand US dollars, down 10.1% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, import values rose by 69.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 19.1%. The peak value occurred in 2019 at 3 352 thousand US dollars, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 52.3%.
