Earlier Report Observations

Grape production in Cyprus showed a gradual increase from 22.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 23.1 thousand tons in 2020, despite a long-term trend of vineyard reduction noted in the sector. The crisis in viticulture was highlighted in 2018 when SODAP, the main wine grape processor, decided to stop accepting grapes for winemaking, reflecting structural challenges within the industry.

Between 2021 and 2023, production experienced significant volatility driven by extreme weather and state support measures. In 2021, a prolonged heatwave and drought, particularly in the Limassol and Paphos regions, along with fertilization and spraying restrictions in Natura protected areas, led to near-zero yields in affected zones, though total output remained stable. The following year, despite wildfires that destroyed 5,000 decares of vineyards in mountainous Limassol, government subsidies totaling 34.45 million euros helped boost production to 25 thousand tons. However, 2023 saw output fall to 19.6 thousand tons due to an unproductive season with limited table grape and wine grape yields.
