Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh peaches and nectarines in Bhutan grew from 1 135 t in 2018 to 1 246 t in 2019. This expansion was supported by the introduction of improved fruit varieties and the replacement of old monastery orchards with better cultivars, initiatives promoted by the Horticulture Research and Development Project in collaboration with JICA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.

Market volume then fell sharply to 1 060 t in 2020 and 634 t in 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted agricultural production and food security, while ongoing climatic fluctuations and the limited scale of farms constrained yields and output, despite government and World Food Programme support for smallholder resilience.

The decline continued to 515 t in 2022 and 485 t in 2023. Even with the launch of the 'A Million Fruit Tree Plantation Project' in 2021 and the establishment of Bhutan Agro-Industries Limited to expand processing capacity, production bottlenecks and weather variability kept market volumes subdued, despite persistent consumer preference for organic and local fruits.
