Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the particle board market volume in Oceania held steady near 1.1 million cubic meters annually. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply and demand, leading to a substantial rise in wood prices that pushed the market value above 400 million dollars by 2020, even as physical consumption remained level.

A sharp turn came in 2021 when imports surged, boosting total market volume to 1.46 million cubic meters. This spike aligned with extreme volatility in wood production costs, which peaked with a 209% increase in May 2021 before a 53% correction later in the year as pandemic-related supply constraints eased and demand adjusted.

After the 2021 peak, volume returned to around 1.1 million cubic meters in 2022 but climbed to 1.16 million by 2023. Long-term drivers such as housing investments totaling approximately 1.3 trillion dollars over seven years supported construction demand, while decreasing energy prices in 2023-2024 helped reduce production costs and aid market recovery.
