After 2021, the market contracted sharply, falling to 843 thousand m³ by 2023. The decline coincided with a significant reduction in import volumes and a simultaneous rise in exports, which offset the steady but slightly decreasing local production.

In 2024, major producer Sonae Arauco in South Africa emphasized product quality through melamine resin coatings for fire retardancy and durability, while also highlighting the environmental benefits of using recycled wood, aligning with corporate social responsibility trends in the region.
