Particle board of wood market in Belarus

After reaching a market volume of 794 thousand m³ in 2018, the particle board market in Belarus contracted to 433 thousand m³ in 2019. Recovery began in 2020, with volume rising to 475 thousand m³, partly due to continuous improvements in production and finishing technology, which enhanced product quality and manufacturer competitiveness.

Growth resumed in 2021, lifting the market to 634 thousand m³ as producers focused on developing production with an emphasis on improving material properties and expanding the product range. In 2022, the market reached 775 thousand m³, supported by manufacturers reorienting toward the domestic market, reducing export volumes in favor of local buyers, and the introduction of new construction rules and standards that raised requirements for wood-based panels and stimulated demand in the construction sector.

In 2023, the market volume fell to 566 thousand m³. During this period, the segment of moisture-resistant OSB-3 particle boards with improved strength and moisture resistance, produced by Belarusian companies, emerged and grew, diversifying the product offering. Additionally, the 2022 changes to timber sales regulations may have affected raw material availability for production.

In 2020, Belarus produced 1 400 K m³ of particle board of wood, showing a measured increase of 8.5% compared to 2019. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 17.9%, which translates to an annualized decline of 6.4%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 290 K m³, while the peak occurred in 2018 with 1 749 K m³. The most significant drop in production happened in 2019, falling by 26.2%.

Particle board of wood production in Belarus declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 192.2 M $ US, which is 0.6% lower than in 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 19.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 7.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 289.1 M $ US. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 33.1%, while the biggest increase was in 2018, rising by 20.6%.

Exports in kind, K m³

After a two-year decline, foreign particle board of wood supplies from Belarus increased in 2020. The export volume reached 1 049 K m³, marking a gradual increase of 9.1% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 10%, with an annualized rate of 3.4%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 962 K m³, and the largest decline occurred that same year, falling by 9.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, three main markets—Poland, Russia, and Lithuania—together absorbed 82.3% of total particle board of wood exports from Belarus in volume terms.

Belarus's particle board of wood exports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totalled 144.1 M $ US, showing very little change compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 12.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of -4.2%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 175.7 M $ US. The largest decline occurred in 2019, dropping by 17.9%, while the biggest increase was in 2018, rising by 7.2%.

In 2020, particle board of wood imports into Belarus amounted to 124 K m³, marking a significant improvement of 18.8% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 25.3%, with an annualized growth rate of 7.8%. The largest decline was recorded in 2019, falling by 3.2%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, Russia dominated the country structure of particle board of wood imports into Belarus, accounting for 82.4% of total flows, while other destinations were relatively small.

Foreign particle board of wood supplies to Belarus increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 26.8 M $ US, up by 4.7% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 17.5%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia remained the key direction for particle board of wood imports into Belarus, accounting for 71.1% of total imports in value terms, whereas other destinations were much less significant.
