The market for non-coniferous wood fuel in Belarus underwent notable changes between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 2,185 thousand m³, the market volume saw a slight decrease in 2019 before entering a sustained growth phase, reaching a peak of 4,073 thousand m³ in 2022.

This expansion aligned with a period of rising domestic production, which increased from 2,648 thousand m³ to 4,180 thousand m³ over the same interval. Concurrently, export volumes, which had previously represented a substantial outflow, declined significantly from their earlier levels.

In 2023, the market contracted to 2,925 thousand m³, a change accompanied by a reduction in production and a near-complete halt in exports. Imports remained negligible throughout the entire period, having no material impact on overall market size.

Belarus has seen its production of non-coniferous wood fuel grow for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 3 132 K m³, marking a 10.3% increase compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production surged by 49.7%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 14.4%.

In 2020, Belarus exported 549.2 K m³ of non-coniferous wood fuel, a decrease of 22.7% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports overall rose by 12.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.0%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 465.1 K m³, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 710.4 K m³. The most significant year-on-year increase was in 2019, at 52.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland, Lithuania, and Germany were consistently the top destinations for Belarus's non-coniferous wood fuel exports by volume. Poland accounted for 43.2% of exports, Lithuania for 23.2%, and Germany for 9.1%. Together, these three countries made up 75.6% of total export flows.

After two years of growth, Belarus's export value of non-coniferous wood fuel declined. In 2020, exports totaled 20 153 K US dollars, down 8.4% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 span, export value increased by 73.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 20.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 21 990 K US dollars, and the largest year-on-year increase was in 2018 at 42.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Poland, Germany, and Lithuania were the primary buyers of non-coniferous wood fuel from Belarus in value terms. Poland represented 23.1% of export value, Germany 22.5%, and Lithuania 16.0%. Combined, these three countries accounted for 61.6% of total export value.

Import volumes of non-coniferous wood fuel into Belarus showed notable fluctuations during this period. The lowest point was in 2017, while imports peaked in 2018, with a 2.2-fold difference between these years. In 2020, imports reached 1.7 K m³, a significant rise of 12.8% compared to 2019. The maximum volume was recorded in 2018 at 2.5 K m³. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 39.5%, and the largest increase was in 2018 at 116.3%.

Belarus's import value of non-coniferous wood fuel fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 269 K US dollars, a drop of 12.3% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, import value decreased by 17.6%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 6.2%. The highest value was in 2018 at 376 K US dollars. The largest year-on-year decline was in 2019 at 18.2%, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 15.0%.
