The market for paper or paperboard labels in Slovakia saw substantial expansion from 2020 to 2023, with volume rising from 3 226 t to 6 549 t. This growth was partly fueled by the March 2021 implementation of new EU energy labels, which simplified appliance energy efficiency ratings and created demand for updated paper labels. Domestic production remained relatively steady between 2 767 t and 2 881 t over these years, so the increased consumption was supplied by higher imports, which peaked at 6 248 t in 2023.

In the earlier part of the period, the market offered a wide range of paper self-adhesive labels compatible with various printers and inks for applications like archive and inventory marking. By 2024, multiple legislative changes took effect, including the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) that broadened environmental rules for labels and packaging. The Slovak pulp and paper industry also reported a breakthrough year in 2024, with paper output growing by 15.3% and surpassing 1 million t, indicating a stronger production base for paper labels. Concurrently, imports of labels fell to 4 902 t in 2024, while exports declined to 2 115 t.

In 2020, Slovakia exported 3 254 tonnes of paper or paperboard labels, representing a 21.2% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 25.1%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 7.7%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 18.0%, while the highest increase was recorded in 2018 at 25.9%. The peak export volume was reached in 2018, totaling 3 275 tonnes.

From 2017 to 2020, the key export partners for Slovakia's paper or paperboard labels in terms of volume were Czechia, accounting for 35.1% of exports, Austria with 13.8%, and Hungary at 13.5%. Together, these three countries represented 62.5% of Slovakia's total export flows in this category.
